Four Genre-Neutral
Improvisational Studies
for Vibraphone Avant-Garde |
So prolific is the use of the vibraphone in a particular musical style that my employment of the phrase “genre-neutral” in the title is only slightly tongue-in-cheek.
This is a very organic expression that flowed from my core-creative-place. This work had to happen. A player knows when the work begins to flow from deep inside and it keeps coming and it absolutely refuses to stop. There was a point when I knew that I needed to at least stop for the time it took to power up the recording gear and press record. It simply had to happen.
While enjoying this, you may hear the sound of an occasional mallet landing in the space between bars, a small cough which I held in for nearly eight minutes and someone entering, unaware that I was recording. I prefer the informality and the immediacy of things such as studio-chatter, a verbal cue to another player, a vocal expression of the true emotion that music infects a player with. It is the process of very human beings making very real music.
Recorded Direct-to-PCM, the session took place over two days in April 2009. The instrument was in my recording space over the course of some weeks while working on a yet to be completed project for vibraphone master Mr. Khan Jamal. Thanks go out to Mr. Jamal for permitting me play it at night while he was at home.
A genuine musical happening for me; I am elated that this was preserved to be shared.
