It was a privilege to listen to my father practice every day in our house, and to hear him play string quartets twice a month in our dining room with some of his fellow Philadelphia Orchestra members. He was a life-time member of the viola section.

This is how I learned to appreciate the true sound of fine, wooden musical instruments.

There is an intimacy to hearing fine, expensive, wooden instruments in this way; hearing the harmonics of the wood; the deep, rich, sweet tone and texture. This is a rare experience that only a few will ever get to hear. Most of these sonic components are lost when listening in the 30th row of even the best modern concert halls and certainly in the highly reverberant environment of some not so perfect halls; severely smearing and corrupting the sound of the instrument before it reaches the audience member. It is this experience, of the intimate sweetness, richness and delicate texture that I strive to capture and to convey to you, the listener of our work.

The privilege continued when I apprenticed and then became a recording engineer for the Philadelphia Orchestra. I also spent many years designing, setting-up and installing high-end home music reproduction systems and room acoustics.

Please visit irvingsegall.com to learn about the work my father did off-stage as a classical music labor activist, as well as a founder and chairman of the International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians. Being my father's son and a player myself, Unipheye Music will always be about fairness to the musicians that play and record for us.

Certainly, in addition to the instruments, we endeavor to capture the heart and spirit of the composer, as well as the inner expression and voice of the player. Conveying the feel and the essence of the trance that the player enters; the space where the very highest level of playing occurs.

Ours are organic recordings. We use no compression or limiting or equalization in making them. Room acoustics, as the most important component in either the recording or the playback chain, is the only way in which we balance or do any manipulation, of any sort, to our work. Only very minimal editing is performed - only to fade in and out of the good take and get rid of the instrument tuning, studio chatter, etc. The music itself is typically completely unedited. We perform no alteration or manipulation whatsoever of the recording. We use two microphones plugged directly into microphone preamplifiers then directly into the digital recording equipment.

These are quite the antithesis of dusty old symphonic masters resurrected from the shelves of the vault. We produce fresh new recordings of brilliant contemporary musical artists. We will offer some extremely interesting and diverse music – classical, semi-acoustic alternative jazz, straight-ahead jazz and world music.

In this contuning volatile transition period of the music business, it was an interesting decision to produce Compact Discs only in limited quanitiy. We believe that we are helping the environment while reducing our carbon footprint. We use only 24-Karat-Gold 300-Year Archive-Grade discs that are burnt per order and carfully inspected in our studio facility. We believe in the inherent sonic superiority of this process of creating a CD as opposed to the commercial mass production "pressing" process.

Our music is and will remain DRM Free.

We are deeply, deeply passionate about music. We trust that you feel it as you listen to our work.

In the months and years to come we anticipate bringing you a wealth of wonderful artists and their work. Stop here frequently to check on new releases as well as exciting events such as live webcasts from members of the Unipheye Music family of artists.

We invite you to listen and share the journey with us.

Some Response....

"I have been playing the CDs over the last few days. I am enormously impressed. Their sense of realism is unlike any other CDs or recorded musical performances I have heard before. I really feel the musicians are right there in the room with me. Their wide dynamic range, 'presence' and clarity make a very faithful and truthful performance."
Ross Pogson – Australia, having heard our Mendelssohn/Debussy String Quartets and Camden Shaw Cello Solo albums.

"Compliments to you on the sonic excellence of these tracks. You say they sound natural as you hear you father play over the years in the house. This is not a sales hype and I do concur with the accolades in the reviews cited in your web."
Francis Leung - Hong Kong

"I played the Mendelssohn/Debussy String Quartets CD. I must say that it is without doubt, the finest sounding CD I've ever heard. The sound was quite convincing."
Peter Fulton - Bethesda, Maryland

"I have long accepted the fact that a live performance is a live performance and recorded music the art of illusion. This Unipheye SMRD album moves the twain closer together."
David Kan - 6Moons

"I just love quality of recording and music itself. Well done."
Sergey Tokarenko - Hong Kong

"After a short and brief listening, what comes to my brain is 'wonderful new experience'. Will go further to get more from your web. This is an interesting experience in buying music. Warm and pleasant!!! Wish you great success as a reward to your enthusiasm on music and recording!" Arthur Yang - Taipei, Taiwan

"Among audiophiles, 'I could almost reach and touch them' is the highest praise imaginable. With that as one's goal, you succeed in capturing the quartet's essential 'woodiness.' High marks for that." Mike Silverton - Music Reviewer, The Stereo Times, having listened to the Mendelssohn & Debussy String Quartets

"I have been listening to it and enjoying it thoroughly. The musicianship is superb from these young musicians and your recording quality has that wonderful, natural "you are there" presence and life to it." Nelson Brill - Music Reviewer, The Stereo Times, referring to the Mendelssohn/Debussy quartets

"I listened to the (string quartet) recording and the realism is striking, almost frightening in its clarity. Audiophiles must love it when they hear a performance like this on their heavy artillery."
Robert Fitzpatrick, Dean of the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia

"This was without question one of the finest recordings I have ever heard. Instruments had a more natural tonal quality than I thought possible, and the sense of space they conveyed was astonishingly realistic..." Larry Borden, Stereo Times, regarding one of our string quartet recordings.

"I downloaded the FLAC 192/24 version of the Karp Segall Experiment. The sense of being in a small intimate room with the three musicians so clear and almost palpable is very special. I have a couple of HR-X Reference Recording disks, and I find your recording even cleaner and more to my musical taste.
Keep up the good work!"

Richard Netsky

"I listened to the discs and enjoyed the excellent sonics and musicianship. The playing on the Beethoven is beautiful and the recording is unlike any space I have heard before - like hearing it played in a small living room space, up close and personal. Very involving and tactile." Nelson Brill - Music Reviewer, The Stereo Times

"They have everything we look for in recordings - a sense of air and of the size of the recording space. It sounded like the instruments were right there in the room with us - and the rich tone. They are very organic. I got a sense that I heard exactly what you were going for. What's important to express is that you're more than just an engineer.... this is art. I’m very impressed."
Alan Saslow

"It sounds like the instruments are in the room, my speakers have disappeared – they’re gone – the musicians are sitting right here – the cellist is on the inside, right? This sounds like a record with no surface noise. It doesn’t matter if this is digital or analog. This is amazing. I hear the spit in the bell of the bass-clarinet. I’ve never heard anything sound so real. You’ve taken it to another level."
Frank Stankowski

"I listened to the recording and I was honestly blown away."
Ben Beilman - April 2008, having heard our recording of the string quartet he plays with

"It was beautiful music! I did not hear any better at the show and I guarantee that I'll be one of your customers. People need to hear your recordings."
Stephen Post - October 2007, after listening to several tracks of our demo CD at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest

"I heard your recordings at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in November. I was stunned to say the least. Thank you."
Clark Blumenstein - Blumenstein-Ultra-Fi.com - April 2008

"I listened to the Bach Partitas for cello about six times. It was incredible. I've always loved Bach, but this was... I don't have the words... transplendant. It took me to another plateau. It's like a great dinner. After I've consumed something really incredible, I don't want anything else for a while. I don't want anything moving in on the taste memory."
Ken Bingham - February 2008
